Day 31. Evening. Estevan, SK, Canada

It was a long day, with many stops: Big Buff, 2 gas fills, groceries, duty free, border crossing plus the mandatory pit and lunch breaks. We pulled into Estevan about 5 PM, temp at 90, humidity about the same, muggy, sticky, beaucoup skeeters, button ‘er up, turn on the A/C, pop the top on an Alaskan IPA, sit back, mellow out. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Big Buff is 26’ tall, contains 60 tons of concrete, was built in 1959 and is currently the subject of a naming contest. Five names are on the short list, including Beauford, Benny and Sir James. Sir James seems like a reach. I’ve not heard of any bison bison – the scientific name – achieving knighthood, and getting the Queen of England over to do the job seems unrealistic. I like Beauford. If you want to vote for your name of choice you have to drive to Jamestown and drop a buck into a container at one of several participating retail locations. Good luck with that.

I should mention that I have no particular interest in buffalo butts and scrotums, despite pix that imply otherwise. The light was all wrong for getting good frontal shots, that’s all. Really.

We’re in Woodlawn Community Park and when we first pulled in, I was amazed that so many Floridians were camped here. We did a little walkabout and discovered that only our neighbors are actually from Florida (headed to Alaska, like us); Saskatchewan license plates look exactly like FL plates until you get up quite close.

We had a good wifi connection in Jamestown but for some reason couldn’t get email and some websites so will need to hit a hotspot tomorrow. Neither of us are superstars when it comes to computer problems. We cuss at Bill Gates a lot and muddle along. Could it be a firewall thing? If anybody out there has a clue, we would welcome your input.

  1. Clueless. My computer repairman husband just tells me to reboot when I complain.
