Instant replay: pulled into WalMart at 3 PM, asked auto service manager if we can get oil/filter/rotate, she said they’re short on staff, somebody out sick, might be able to get us in around 6:30 but no guarantees, first come first serve. Great! We park by the auto service bay door for 3.5 hours so maybe we can get in at 6:30?
The hell with it; drive out of WalMart and spy a quick lube place ½ block away, oil and filter done in 20 minutes, and they point out a place across the street to get the tires rotated, and that’s done in 10 minutes.
Got Ranger spiffed up, bought a 5-gallon gas can for backup, parked the rig in the WalMart lot for the night, zero $, very good price. Many WalMart stores allow RV parking but this is the first time we’ve taken advantage of it. Ambience leaves something to be desired but if you only need a convenient spot to spend the night, what the hell.
It rained for the first few hours of our drive yesterday; weather forecast for the next few days is sunny and warm, very welcome after several days of cool, cloudy and rainy. No moose sighted yet despite numerous signs along the road.
We’re excited about finally arriving at milepost zero at Dawson Creek today. Tonight we’ll camp a bit beyond DC, seek out a nice wooded provincial park to offset the WalMart parking lot.
Are you going North now on 97 the rest of the way until Hwy 1? It seems like 97 bypasses most of the provincial parks...but perhaps it all feels like a provincial park up there.

Yup, you got it: 97 to 1, and then 1 to 2. That's The Alaska Highway, originally the Alcan, all 1523 miles of it, ending in Fairbanks.
