Bonito USFS Campground near Flagstaff

Squinty and Baldy?  No.  Brothers Pat and Mike on LHC front terrace.

                                  Pat and Julie.

Fire ring in Bonito, a design not seen before.  Nobody's gonna steal it and the fire darn sure isn't going to burn through and ignite a tree root.

Bonito Campground, full of ponderosa pine.

Day one, pulled out of LHC at 10:05 AM after shutting the house down for the summer.  Pat and Julie (bro/wife) left earlier in the AM, bound for Hoover Dam and Vegas, will rejoin us in Page on 6-1 for houseboat trip.  Bonito altitude is nearly 7000’, it’s 5AM and it’s 27 degrees outside - a shock to our systems after daily highs of 100+ in LHC.  Didn’t think we’d see freezing temps this whole trip, got disabused of that idea PDQ.
.
There are forest fires in the area and some 40 firefighters are camped near us.  Although there are fire rings in the campground, fires are banned due to dry conditions.  Bummer, but okay because we were pretty beat when we got here yesterday and didn’t feel like cooking anyway.  Dinner was a bagged salad, French bread and fake crab - simple fare but still one of our favorites.
.
Today, we’re off to Page, AZ, touring Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monuments en route.  Sunset is a volcano that erupted about the year1100, wreaking havoc with the Native Americans who lived in the area.  Wupatki NM has several pueblo-type ruins the natives left behind.   The eruption dumped so much ash and debris that the natives could no longer live off the land.  They split up, boogied off in all directions to build new homes and start life over.

  1. Pat and Mike--was your family Irish or somethin'?
The Bonito fire ring looks like a potty chair. I guess that you'd call being on the hot seat.
